Office 365 Roadmap Updated: 2024-11-01

(Updated) Exchange Online token deprecation plan
Category:Exchange Online
Nummer:MC902782
Status:planForChange

Updated Oct 30, 2024: We have updated the content.

We’re contacting you because your tenant uses legacy Exchange Online tokens that are deprecated and Outlook add-ins that still use them will break when tokens are turned off.

  • Legacy Exchange Online user identity tokens and callback tokens are deprecated and will soon be turned off for all Exchange Online tenants. This is part of Microsoft’s Secure Future Initiative to protect orgs in the current threat landscape. If add-ins use legacy tokens to make calls to Exchange, developers need to migrate from Exchange tokens to using Nested App Authentication (NAA) and Entra ID tokens ASAP.
  • Code changes to add-ins using legacy Exchange Online tokens are required to ensure they continue to work. We recommend you update affected add-ins to use NAA, which provides simple authentication and top tier identity protection through APIs designed specifically for add-ins in Office hosts.

NOTE: This change only applies to Exchange Online; add-ins used in on-premises environments are not impacted by this change.

[Recommended actions:]

  • Administrators: Identify which add-ins need to be updated and contact the ISVs or developers of those applications to get updates.
  • Developers: Check the add-in code to see if the related API calls are used and then make appropriate updates.
  • Register: The updated add-ins require an application registration in Microsoft Azure. Developers need to create an application registration for each add-in. Admins need to consent to the application registration for each add-in’s required permissions.
  • Don’t wait: Add-ins are often part of mission critical functions, and the updates will take time to implement. It’s best to implement updates well before legacy Exchange Online tokens are turned off.

[When will Microsoft turn off legacy Exchange Online tokens?]

Microsoft begins turning off legacy Exchange online tokens in February 2025. From now until February 2025, existing and new tenants will not be affected. We’ll provide tooling for administrators to reenable Exchange tokens for tenants and add-ins if those add-ins aren’t yet migrated to NAA.

Date Legacy tokens status
Feb 2025 Legacy tokens turned off for all tenants. Admins can reenable legacy tokens via PowerShell.
Jun 2025 Legacy tokens turned off for all tenants. Admins can no longer reenable legacy tokens via PowerShell and must contact Microsoft for any exception
Oct 25 Legacy tokens turned off for all tenants. Exceptions are no longer allowed.

[When is NAA generally available for my channel?]

The general availability (GA) date for NAA depends on which channel you are using.

Date NAA General Availability (GA)
Oct 2024 NAA is GA in Current Channel.
Nov 2024 NAA will GA in Monthly Enterprise Channel.
Jan 25 NAA will GA in Semi-Annual Channel.
Jun 25 NAA will GA in Semi-Annual Extended Channel.

[How do I check which Outlook add-ins are impacted?]

From October 30th through mid-November 2024, we’ll roll out new tooling via PowerShell for Microsoft 365 administrators to turn legacy Exchange tokens on or off in your tenant. If you find you need to reenable legacy Exchange tokens, you can use the PowerShell cmdlets to do so. The tooling will also report if any add-ins are using legacy tokens over the last 28 days. Once the tooling is available will update the Outlook legacy token deprecation FAQ with additional documentation details.

Add-ins may use the legacy Exchange tokens to get resources from Exchange through the EWS or Outlook REST APIs. Sometimes an add-in requires Exchange resources for some use cases and not others, making it difficult to figure out whether the add-in requires an update. We recommend reaching out to add-in developers and owners to ask them if their add-in code references the following APIs:

We’ll provide tooling via PowerShell for Microsoft 365 admins in October 2024 to turn legacy Exchange tokens on or off in your tenant. This will allow you to test if any add-ins are using Exchange tokens. We’ll provide more info when the tooling is ready in the Outlook legacy token deprecation FAQ.

If you rely on an independent software vendor (ISV) for your add-in, we recommend you contact them as soon as possible to confirm they have a plan and a timeline for moving off legacy Exchange tokens. ISV developers should reach out directly to their Microsoft contacts with questions to ensure they’re ready for the end of Exchange legacy tokens. If you rely on a developer within your organization, we recommend you ask them to review the Updates on deprecating legacy Exchange Online tokens for Outlook add-ins blog and ask any questions to the Outlook extensibility PM team on the OfficeDev/office-js GitHub issues site.

[How do I keep up with the latest guidance?]

We’ll share additional guidance on the Office Add-ins community call, the M365 developer blog, and the Outlook legacy token deprecation FAQ.

Ask questions about NAA and legacy Exchange Online token deprecation on the OfficeDev/office-js GitHub issues site. Please put “NAA” in the title.

Windows Autopatch Entra Group Owner Migration
Category:Windows Autopatch
Nummer:MC921912
Status:planForChange

Windows Autopatch will update the owner of Autopatch owned Entra groups that are currently exclusively owned by the ‘Modern Workplace Management’ application.

Windows Autopatch will update the owner of Autopatch owned Entra groups that are currently exclusively owned by the ‘Modern Workplace Management’ application. This change is due to Windows Autopatch migrating from App-only auth to user auth to manage our groups. To start, all Autopatch owned groups will be owned by both the new application ‘Modern Workplace Customer API’ in addition to the previous application. No customer-owned Entra groups will be impacted.

We will roll out the new application gradually, starting mid-November through mid-December. At a future date, the current application, ‘Modern Workplace Management’, will be deprecated, and replaced by the new application, ‘Modern Workplace Customer API’.

[When this will happen:]

We will begin rolling out these changes to your tenant starting November 11th,2024 through December 11th, 2024.

If you have any questions or concerns, or need assistance, file a service request by visiting the Microsoft Intune Admin Center

[How this will affect your organization:]

The new application is intended to replace the existing application on Windows Autopatch tenants. This is for scalability and performance efforts by Windows Autopatch. There is no immediate impact to your environment.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

There is no action required from you at this time.

(Updated) Microsoft OneDrive: The Enable OCSI for Tenants group policy is being removed
Category:OneDrive for Business
Nummer:MC921916
Status:planForChange

Updated October 31, 2024: We have updated the content. Thank you for your patience.

We’re removing the EnableAllOcsiClients OneDrive group policy in the Microsoft 365 admin center. OCSI is the coordination between office and OneDrive for syncing office documents to the cloud.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 429874.

[How this will affect your organization:]

After this rollout, the EnableAllOcsiClients group policy will be removed, and Microsoft Office and Microsoft OneDrive will be able to communicate smoothly to ensure existing Office features like autosave, version history, real time user collaboration, and merging in the case of conflicts can work properly for end users.

Before this rollout, tenants had the option to disable this feature with a GPO, and when they disable the GPO, existing Office features like autosave, version history, real time user collaboration, and merging in the case of conflicts cannot work properly.

 [When this will happen:]

General Availability (Worldwide, GCC, GCC High, DoD): We will be rolling out in April 2025.

[How this will affect your organization:]

With OCSI enabled for all tenants, end users will be able to take advantage of features such as autosave, real time user collab, and merging in the case of conflicts of Office files.  Autosave is a feature that end users will see in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files; it is a toggle at the top left of the file header that will ensure that even if the user does not manually save a file, the file will be saved automatically to OneDrive and SharePoint. With real time user collaboration, different users can collaborate on the same file at the same time. Version history allows users to see when and who made changes to a file and provides the ability to restore to a previous version of the file within the Office app. If there are conflicts within a file that does not require user input, Office will merge the conflicts and ensure that the Office file is up to date with the latest changes. If user input is required to merge conflicts, Office will show the merge conflicts and prompt the user to choose which edits to prioritize.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

This rollout will happen automatically by the specified date with no admin action required before the rollout. Review your current configuration to determine the impact for your organization. You may want to notify your users about this change, especially if the policy is disabled, educate them about autosave, real time user collab, and merging in the case of M365 application conflicts, and update any relevant documentation.

For more information, see Allow users to choose how to handle Office file sync conflicts.

Microsoft Purview | Data Loss Prevention: Turning on Data Loss Prevention analytics
Category:Microsoft Purview
Nummer:MC921917
Status:stayInformed

In Microsoft Purview, Data Loss Prevention (DLP) analytics is a feature that helps you to analyze data protection challenges, gaps, policy, and posture enhancement possibilities in your organization.

After you turn on DLP analytics, recommendations are generated weekly. There are two new cards that show prioritized recommendations, while View all recommendations shows all generated recommendations.

[When this will happen:]

General Availability (GCC, GCC High, DoD): We will begin rolling out mid-October 2024 and expect to complete by late October 2024.

[How this will affect your organization:]

DLP analytics provides details on risks, blind spots, and policy improvement opportunities based on the past 30 days’ data with one-click recommendations. Also, new recommendations will be available each week.

Turn on Analytics

Step 1:

In Purview, go to Data loss prevention on the left navigation and select Overview.

The task pane shows an option to Turn on analytics.

After turning on analytics, it takes up to 7 days to generate recommendations. This feature leverages Purview’s capabilities to understand logs and telemetry like classification, activity, user profile, policy configuration, alerts, and incident information to generate recommendations.

RW1qdfe?ver=c0e7 - KbWorks - SharePoint & Teams Specialist

Step 2:

Seven days after turning on analytics, recommendations will be generated.

The two categories of recommendations include:

  1. Risk spotlighting: Reveals top risks that need mitigation through a new policy.
  2. Policy finetuning: Provides policy improvement opportunities.

When you select View detection details, a side card opens that provides more details on found risks.

RW1qnI9?ver=d46a - KbWorks - SharePoint & Teams Specialist

Use View activities to review supporting evidence. The side pane has a preconfigured policy for mitigating risk with the right configurations.

RW1qnIe?ver=b840 - KbWorks - SharePoint & Teams Specialist

You can create a new policy or update the preconfigured policy with a few clicks by opening the recommendation, reviewing, and applying the recommendations.

The analytics algorithm examines your tenant, identifies blind spots or risks that require attention, and suggests mitigations. The recommendations are prioritized by highest impact. The top two recommendations are shown as cards and the rest are available as prioritized lists for admins to take necessary actions.

Step 3:

View all recommendations and take actions.

Recommendations are generated weekly and will remain in the queue for 4 weeks unless admin actions are taken.

For policy improvement recommendations that require an update to policies, a copy of the policy is created when the admin takes action.

RW1qdfk?ver=113d - KbWorks - SharePoint & Teams Specialist

Disabling Analytics

From the Task pane on the DLP overview page, you can disable analytics in the Manage settings pane. After you disable analytics, it might take up to 24 hours for it to stop running.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

This rollout will happen automatically with no admin action required. You may want to notify your users about this change and update any relevant documentation as appropriate.

Dynamics 365 Field Service – Summarize work orders with Copilot in Outlook
Category:Dynamics 365 Apps
Nummer:MC921924
Status:stayInformed
We are announcing the Summarize work orders with Copilot in Outlook feature for Dynamics 365 Field Service. This feature allows you to get a summary of a work order without having to leave Outlook and open the Field service web or mobile apps. This feature will reach general availability on November 18, 2024.

How does this affect me?
The Dynamics 365 Field Service for Outlook add-in enables Copilot to create a summary that captures all the important information required for service managers and frontline workers to understand the context of a work order. This summary is identical to the summary in both the Field Service web and mobile apps. By default, Copilot provides these summaries based on a predefined list of tables and columns that Microsoft maintains, but administrators can change the summary configuration to meet their business needs.

The default summary includes the following data fields from work orders and related records:
  • Booking information
  • Activity details
  • Notes from the work order and bookings
  • Work order product details
  • Work order service details
  • Work order service tasks
  • Asset information and work order history
What do I need to do to prepare?
This message is for awareness and no action is required.

We are announcing the use contextual copilot to add a page to your Power Pages site feature for Power Pages. This feature will enable makers to describe the page they want using natural language directly in their workflow and Copilot will generate the page. This feature will reach general availability on November 30, 2024.

How does this affect me?
With this feature, we’re introducing the ability to leverage Copilot directly in your workflow inside of Power Pages design studio to generate webpages with Copilot through the sidecar in the ‘Pages’ workspace.

Users may use contextual copilot to:
  • Describe a page for Copilot to generate using natural language.

How to prepare for Windows 10 end of support by moving to Windows 11
Category:Windows
Nummer:MC922358
Status:stayInformed
As the end of support for Windows 10 approaches, Microsoft wants to ensure your organization is well-prepared for the transition to Windows 11. This end of support on October 14, 2025* marks an important step in our mission to provide the most modern and secure computing experience possible. It also reflects our commitment to continually improving Windows security as part of Microsoft Secure Future Initiative.

Today we published a new blog post to help you prepare for Windows 10 end of support and outlined options for moving to Windows 11. For details, see How to prepare for Windows 10 end of support by moving to Windows 11.

When this will happen:
Starting October 14, 2025, Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates. Information on the purchase of Extended Security Updates (ESU) for organizations of all sizes was previously announced in April of this year

How this will affect your organization:
As security threats evolve and adapt, so must our operating systems and hardware. Because of this, we designed Windows 11 to be the most secure version of Windows ever — by default and design — to help you stay ahead of those risks. Advanced security features include hardware-based protection through TPM 2.0, enhanced authentication methods, and virtualization-based security fully enabled by default.

What you need to do to prepare:
With 99.7% compatibility with Windows 10 apps**, the move to Windows 11 can be done with the same tools and processes you use today. Organizations can take advantage of a range of tools designed to support this transition, ensuring minimal disruption to your operations.

Additional information:
For organizations that need a bit more time before moving to new Windows 11 devices or Copilot+ PCs, as previously announced, an annual Extended Security Updates (ESU) program will be available. Enrolled devices will continue to receive critical and important security updates for Windows 10. However, new features, bug fixes, and technical support will no longer be available from Microsoft.

Notes:
*Long-Term Servicing Branch (LTSB) and Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) releases are subject to different lifecycle support policies. Check out the Microsoft lifecycle website for more information.
**Microsoft App Assure program data from October 2018 to February 2022.

Microsoft Places app ON by default
Category:Microsoft 365 apps
Nummer:MC922620
Status:planForChange

We’re making it easier for users to access the Microsoft Places app. This app is accessible on the web, or as an app inside Teams, Outlook and the Microsoft 365 app.

The Microsoft Places app helps users coordinate their in-office days with colleagues. When work location is shared from OWA or the new Outlook Calendar, users will see others’ work locations and can decide the best days to be in the office for in-person collaboration.

Users with Teams Premium will have access to additional features in the Microsoft Places app:

  • Team Guidance for leaders to communicate which days their team should plan to be in the office and what the priorities are for each in-office day. Providing a purpose for team days in the office gives you another reason to come into the office. Team Guidance will be ON for all Teams Premium users. Admins can selectively turn off this feature following these instructions.
  • Places Explorer to discover what’s happening in the office, who’s in the office, and find places like services and amenities. Admins will need to configure buildings and floors for Places Explorer to show building details.

[When this will happen:]

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out early December 2024 and complete by mid-December 2024.

[How this will affect your organization:]

With this change, the Places app will be accessible by default for all users by navigating to this URL, but you need to take action to make it easier to discover inside Teams,  Outlook and the Microsoft 365 app. To improve the user experience, admins can set up policies to pin the Places app for your users.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

If you were part of the Microsoft Places Preview and followed the onboarding instruction, access to the Places app is likely restricted to users in the ‘PlacesUsers’ Security Group. You need to take action to broaden access to other users in your tenant, as described here

If you were not part of the Preview and want to restrict access to the Places app, you can do so today by using PowerShell: Set-PlacesSettings – Feature Parameters. Access restriction will apply to the app on the web and inside Teams, Outlook and Microsoft 365 app.
