Windows Deployment Services (WDS): Hands-free deployment hardening (Phase 1)
Category:Windows
Nummer:MC1217584
Status:stayInformed
Prepare for a two-phase hardening change related to CVE-2026-0386. The Unattend.xml file that underlies the hands-free deployment feature of Windows Deployment Services (WDS) poses a vulnerability when it’s transmitted over an unauthenticated RPC channel. Starting with the January 2026 security update, you can explicitly disable it with the help of new Event Log alerts and registry key options. In April 2026, hands-free deployment will be disabled by default. After that date, it will no longer work unless explicitly overridden with registry settings.

When will this happen:
  • January 2026 security update: Phase 1 of hardening begins. Hands-free deployment continues to be supported and can be explicitly disabled to enhance security. Use the new Event Log alerts and registry key options.
  • April 2026 security update: Phase 2 of hardening follows. Hands-free deployment will be disabled by default but can be re-enabled, if necessary, with an understanding of the associated security risks.

How this will affect your organization:
These hardening measures are meant to enhance security. If no action is taken (no registry key added) between January-April 2026, hands-free deployment will be blocked after the April 2026 security update.

What you need to do to prepare:
Apply the Windows update released on or after January 13, 2026 to enable the mitigation and ensure that devices are secure. When ready to disable hands-free deployment, apply the following registry setting:
  • Registry location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WdsServer\Providers\WdsImgSrv\Unattend
  • DWORD name: AllowHandsFreeFunctionality
  • Value data: 00000000

Nummer:MC1217615
Status:stayInformed
We are announcing the ability to configure content moderation levels for AI prompts in Microsoft Copilot Studio and Power Platform. This feature setting will reach general availability on January 31, 2026.

How does this affect me?
Users in Microsoft Copilot Studio and Power Platform can now adjust the content moderation level for their AI prompts. The moderation level can be adjusted via the settings panel in the prompt builder. Lowering moderation increases the risk of harmful content in the prompt’s responses. Higher moderation is lower risk but may result in fewer responses.

What action do I need to take?
This message is for awareness, and no action is required.

Who is affected: Admins who manage Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps and configure the Microsoft 365 connector.

What will happen:

  • Existing connectors will not be modified. All current connector settings will remain unchanged for privacy reasons.
  • The configuration page in the Microsoft 365 connector will receive an updated layout to clarify required permissions.
  • New default values will apply only to newly created Microsoft 365 connectors.
  • Limiting access to required Microsoft Entra signals may reduce threat detection coverage and posture accuracy.

[What you need to do to prepare]

  • Review your current configuration of Microsoft 365 connector settings to ensure required Entra permissions remain enabled:
  •  user settings

  • To do this:
    1. Go to Microsoft Security platform > Settings > Cloud apps > App connectors.
    2. Select Microsoft 365.
    3. Choose Edit settings.
    4. Ensure that all required checkboxes are selected (All except “Microsoft 365 files”).
    5. Select Connect Microsoft 365.
  • Inform your security and identity teams about the updated UI so they are prepared once the refreshed layout becomes available.
  • Update internal documentation as needed.

Power BI: End of support for on-prem SharePoint web part
Category:Power BI
Nummer:MC1217651
Status:planForChange

[Introduction]

We are ending support for the SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) Report Viewer SharePoint Webpart feature. This change aligns with our efforts to simplify integration and improve reliability by using modern embedding methods. Instead of the Webpart, we recommend embedding SSRS reports in SharePoint using URL parameters.

[When this will happen:]

Support for the SSRS Report Viewer SharePoint Webpart will end on April 13, 2026.

[How this affects your organization:]

  • Who is affected: Organizations using the SSRS Report Viewer Webpart in SharePoint.
  • What will happen:
    • The SSRS Report Viewer Webpart will no longer receive updates or support after April 13, 2026.
    • Users can still download and use the component, but it will not be maintained.
    • No changes will occur automatically in existing SharePoint environments; the feature will remain functional but unsupported.
[What you can do to prepare:]

No admin action is required for this change. However, we recommend transitioning to the alternative approach: embed SSRS reports in SharePoint using URL parameters
