(Updated) Microsoft OneNote Windows app: New “OneNote (Desktop) – Protected” virtual printer
Category:Microsoft 365 apps
Nummer:MC1020207
Status:planForChange

Updated March 17, 2025: We have updated the content. Thank you for your patience.

Coming soon for Microsoft OneNote: The new OneNote (Desktop) – Protected virtual printer will roll out to all OneNote Windows desktop app users on x86 (32-bit) and x64 (64-bit) devices. We will automatically install the protected printer on all eligible devices (starting with Current Channel) with OneNote Windows app versions 2410 and later and devices running Windows 11 versions 26100 or higher. As a tenant admin, to ensure the successful installation of this printer on your organization’s devices, you must configure specific group policies.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 402540.

[When this will happen:]

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out late February 2025 and expect to complete by early April 2025.

[How this will affect your organization:]

Why is Microsoft introducing this new printer when we already have a OneNote (Desktop) printer for the OneNote Windows app?

    • Since October 2024, as a part of the new Modern Print platform, Windows has introduced a secure printing capability called Windows Protected Printing (WPP), which, when turned On, will uninstall and remove all non-IPP-based (Internet Printing Protocol) printers from independent hardware vendors (IHVs) and independent software vendors (ISVs) from the list of available printers, including the OneNote (Desktop) printer. To prevent feature issues for users of the OneNote (Desktop) printer, we’re introducing the new protected virtual printer, which is based on Microsoft’s IPP class driver and is compatible with WPP. Learn more about WPP and the Modern Print platform: Modern Print Platform – Microsoft Support

Our organization has many regular users of the Print to OneNote capability using the existing OneNote (Desktop) printer. Should they expect any changes to their workflow?

What happens to the old OneNote (Desktop) printer already installed on user’s devices?

        • On the target Windows 11 builds (>26100.0000) with WPP, turning WPP On will automatically uninstall the existing OneNote (Desktop) printer (because it is based on the v4 printer driver). When WPP is Off, the OneNote (Desktop) printer will continue to exist with the new protected printer on user devices when they upgrade to the target OneNote builds.

Can users of the OneNote app turn off or uninstall the new printer?

          • Yes, if they have permission to uninstall apps on their device. The new protected virtual printer will be installed as a Print Support App (PSA) and can be completely uninstalled from the list of programs in their Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps. The new printer can be seen installed as a separate app called OneNote (Desktop) – Protected Virtual Printer. NOTE: With WPP on, uninstalling the new protected virtual printer will break the Print to OneNote experience. To restore the protected printer, users will need to uninstall and then reinstall the OneNote app. Users should ensure their notes are synced before uninstalling to avoid losing unsynchronized changes.

This change will be available by default.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

This rollout will happen automatically by the specified date with no admin action required before the rollout. Review your current configuration to determine the impact for your organization. You may want to notify your users about this change and update any relevant documentation.

As an admin, how can you ensure all eligible devices in your organization get the new printer installed without issues?

          • The OneNote (Desktop) – Protected virtual printer will be installed by default (starting with Current Channel) in all OneNote Windows app versions 2410 and later running Windows 11 versions 26100 or higher.
          • Please ensure that the group policy AllowAllTrustedApps is set to Enabled and the group policy BlockNonAdminUserInstall is set to Disabled. These settings are required to complete installation of the new virtual printer on your device. (Updated) Microsoft 365 Copilot Actions in Targeted Release
          Category:Microsoft Copilot (Microsoft 365)
          Nummer:MC1020217
          Status:planForChange

Updated March 17, 2025: We have updated the rollout timeline below. Thank you for your patience.

With Copilot we are bringing the power of next generation AI to the tools millions of people use every day. Another step on that journey is automating time-consuming tasks to enhance employee productivity.

Copilot Actions provides a user-friendly way to automate and delegate common IW tasks within Microsoft 365 to Copilot. Actions combine Copilot prompts and conversations, triggers (events like file modifications or schedules like daily reminders), and user defined rules to generate artifacts. To make getting started easy, Copilot Actions offer categorized Templates such as Catch up and Gather, etc., that are tailored for common personal productivity scenarios. Actions is a Copilot feature which delivers immediate value without the need for any setup. This out-of-the-box functionality ensures that even users with minimal technical expertise can benefit from the powerful async capabilities of Copilot. Copilot Actions is accessed via the Microsoft 365 app for the Web.

This is an English only release for the UX language.

Learn more: End of availability for classic Teams client – Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn

[How this will affect your organization:]

As Microsoft transitions users to new Teams on Mac, we will also attempt to uninstall classic Teams starting from early August 2024 to end of August 2024. The uninstall will be attempted after users update to the latest version of new Teams (24193.1704.3003.3641). The uninstall attempt will happen immediately after the Mac users have updated to new Teams. If this uninstallation is blocked for any reason (for example, by machine configuration, etc.), we will not attempt uninstallation again, and admins will be expected to manually remove classic Teams. The uninstallation guide can be found here: How to uninstall the classic Teams client – Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Learn

[What you need to do to prepare:]

The uninstall of classic Teams will be automatic when users receive an update to the specific build with this functionality—no admin action is required. You may want to notify your users about this change and update any relevant documentation as appropriate.

(Updated) Microsoft Teams: BYOD mode will activate cameras on meeting room audio devices
          Category:Microsoft Teams

Updated March 17, 2025: We have updated the rollout timeline below. Thank you for your patience.

The room audio auto-detect and pre-select feature for Microsoft Teams BYOD rooms (released October 2024) will soon activate the video component of composite audio-video peripherals as the selected camera in Teams. This message applies to Teams for Windows desktops and Teams for Mac desktops.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 469496.

          [When this will happen:]

Targeted Release: We will begin rolling out early April 2025 (previously mid-March) and expect to complete by mid-April 2025 (previously late March).

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out in mid-April 2025 (previously late March) and expect to complete by late April 2025 (previously early April).

[How this will affect your organization:]

This change will be available by default.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

Inform your users that this new behavior will be coming so they are aware that the room’s camera will be used if there is one.

This rollout will happen automatically by the specified date with no admin action required before the rollout. Review your room peripheral inventory to determine the impact for your organization. You may want to notify your users about this change and update any relevant documentation.
Microsoft Purview | Data Lifecycle Management: New secure workflow to bypass legal holds and retention policies
          Category:Microsoft Purview
          Nummer:MC971035
          Status:planForChange

Updated March 17, 2025: We have updated the rollout timeline below. Thank you for your patience.

This new feature enables data governance administrators to expedite the permanent deletion of sensitive content from Microsoft Exchange mailboxes, overriding any existing retention settings or eDiscovery holds. This process may be required for security or privacy, such as after a data spillage incident or for compliance and regulatory requirements.

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 392838.

          [When this will happen:]

Public Preview: We will begin rolling out late February 2025 (previously early February) and expect to complete by mid-March 2025 (previously mid-February).

Worldwide: We will begin rolling out late September 2025 (previously late March) and expect to complete by mid-October 2025 (previously mid-April).

[How this will affect your organization:]

Priority Cleanup administrators can now set up a Priority Cleanup policy for Exchange to create exceptions to retention principles and e-Discovery holds for specific scenarios. Once administrators are within the Data Lifecycle Management (DLM) Solution on Microsoft Purview, they can visit the Priority Cleanup tab and follow the wizard to set-up this policy. Like auto-apply retention labels, Priority Cleanup supports policy simulation mode, so administrators can check the returned samples in case the policy configuration needs any fine-tuning before enabling the policy. Once set-up, because the deletion by a priority cleanup policy is irreversible and can override existing holds, the process requires multiple approvals, specific roles, and is audited. Thus, respective reviewers must be mandatorily added during policy creation to allow for disposition of items under a retention or e-Discovery hold.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

Because of the built-in safeguards, the feature itself is enabled by default at the tenant level. However, Priority Cleanup can be turned off on the Priority Cleanup settings page. If you can’t create new Priority Cleanup policies, refer to your Data Lifecycle Management documentation for necessary roles and permissions requirements. A new role permission “Priority cleanup administrator” is now added to Purview role permissions to enable data governance administrators to use this feature.
