Category:Microsoft 365 suite Microsoft Defender XDR Microsoft Copilot (Microsoft 365)
Nummer:MC1013453
Status:planForChange

We are excited to announce some important updates to M365 Copilot Chat that will enhance security and user experience, following:

  1. Integration with SafeLinks:
    • M365 Copilot Chat will integrate with SafeLinks in Defender for Office 365 to provide time-of-click URL protection for the hyperlinks included in its chat responses.
    • This change applies to users with Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Plan 1 or Plan 2 service plans. No policy configuration is needed within the SafeLinks policy.
    • Within Microsoft Defender for Office 365 Security Center, URL protection report will show the relevant summary and trend views for threats detected and actions taken on URL clicks.
  2. Native Time-of-Click URL Reputation Check:
    • For users without SafeLinks protection (which is available as part of Microsoft Defender for Office 365), M365 Copilot Chat will natively enable time-of-click URL reputation check for the hyperlinks returned in its chat responses.
  3. Hyperlink Redaction Changes:
    • M365 Copilot Chat will no longer redact hyperlinks in its chat responses if they are found in the grounding data used to generate the responses.

[When this will happen:]

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out in late March 2025 and expect to complete by late May 2025.

Rollout will start on desktop and web and will complete with mobile versions. We plan to extend these updates to Copilot Chat experiences in Office apps in the future.

[How this will affect your organization:]

These updates are designed to enhance the security of the links included in M365 Copilot Chat response, ensuring that users are protected from malicious URLs.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

You may consider updating your training and documentation as appropriate to ensure users are aware of the change in behavior with hyperlinks in M365 Copilot Chat.

Microsoft Purview | Information Protection: On-demand classification of files in SharePoint and OneDrive for business
Category:Microsoft 365 suite Microsoft Purview
Nummer:MC1013459
Status:stayInformed

Coming soon to Microsoft Purview | Information Protection: On-demand classification of files is a new capability that will help you discover and classify sensitive content in historical data in Microsoft SharePoint Online and Microsoft OneDrive. This includes files that have never been scanned or files that have not been scanned in some time.

On-demand classification of files is a pay-as-you-go (PAYG) feature (not part of the E5 license).

This message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 475062.

[When this will happen:]

Public Preview: We will begin rolling out late March 2025 and expect to complete by early April 2025.

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out mid-June 2025 and expect to complete by late June 2025.

[How this will affect your organization:]

Before this rollout, classifying files for sensitive data only applies to new or modified items (but not to existing content that has not been edited or opened by users) after a new classifier is created in Purview.

After this rollout, this new feature will help in the following situations:

  • You need to discover sensitive content in historical data that has not been classified by Purview.
  • You need to retroactively discover and classify sensitive content in historical data, due to updates or changes to custom classifier definitions.
  • You need to apply Microsoft Purview | Data Loss Prevention (DLP), a Microsoft Purview | Information Protection (MIP) label, or Microsoft Purview | Data Lifecycle Management (DLM) policies to historical data at rest that was previously unclassified.

After you execute an on-demand classification, any policy configured in DLP, MIP, or DLM will be automatically triggered to apply action if corresponding classifiers are found.

This feature will be available by default for admins to configure. This screenshot shows how to configure the feature in the new Purview portal > Data Loss Prevention > Classifiers > Data scans > PHI scan:

[What you need to do to prepare:]

This rollout will happen automatically by the specified date with no admin action required before the rollout. Review your current configuration to determine the impact for your organization. You may want to notify your users about this change and update any relevant documentation.

Before rollout, we will update this post with new documentation.

[When this will happen:]

General Availability (Worldwide): We will begin rolling out early March 2025 and expect to complete by late March 2025.

[How this will affect your organization:]

This new report will be available by default.

Microsoft 365 Copilot app: Sway will retire from the “Create” tab
Category:Microsoft 365 for the web
Nummer:MC1013463
Status:planForChange

We will retire Sway feature from the Create tab in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app starting March 24, 2025 and ending March 31, 2025 due to low usage. Instead, we recommend using Sway from the Apps section of the Microsoft 365 Copilot app.

This message applies to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app for Windows desktop and Microsoft 365 Copilot app for the web:

Microsoft continues to strive to focus resources improving the most impactful apps and experiences. Even though Microsoft is not investing in improving the Sway product, the current capabilities of Sway remain fully supported and Office/Microsoft 365 users are encouraged to leverage the value that Sway offers.

[How this will affect your organization:]

You are receiving this message because our reporting indicates your organization may be using Sway.

Users will no longer be able to use Sway from the Create tab after this retirement is implemented:

Microsoft OneDrive: We will remove the EEEU sharing permission from root web and default document library
Category:OneDrive for Business
Nummer:MC1013464
Status:planForChange

EEEU, which stands for Everyone Except External Users, is a permission setting used in Microsoft SharePoint and Microsoft OneDrive to manage access to content. This setting allows all internal users in an organization to access certain content while excluding external users. We discourage use of this setting due to concerns about inadvertent oversharing of user data.

[What is changing]

Starting April 10, 2025 and ending by September 30, 2025, we will run logic to detect and remove the EEEU permission from the root site of each user’s OneDrive and the default document library in OneDrive.

[How this will affect your organization:]

Before this retirement, apps, processes, or users may be able to discover and access content from OneDrive because of the inadvertent presence of EEEU in the root web and default document library in OneDrive. After the EEEU permission is removed, these apps, processes, and users will lose access to the content from the affected OneDrive accounts. Users, processes, and apps that were granted direct permissions to specific files and folders of a OneDrive account will not be impacted and will continue to retain their access.

We recommend OneDrive owners and OneDrive admins give explicit permission to individual files and folders in OneDrive to be accessed by one or more users or apps.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

This change will happen automatically by the specified date. No admin action is required. Please notify your users about this change and update relevant documentation. If you have questions or wish to discuss more, please open a support ticket.

Microsoft SharePoint Online: Search, eDiscovery, and DLP policies now enabled on files with custom permissions labels
Category:SharePoint Online
Nummer:MC1013467
Status:stayInformed

Microsoft SharePoint Online now supports content search, Microsoft Purview eDiscovery, and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies on files with labels configured for user-defined permissions.

Learn more about support for labels configured for user-defined permissions.

Note that files with labels configured for user-defined permissions will continue to not be available for Microsoft 365 Copilot processing.

[When will this happen:]

General Availability (Worldwide, GCC, GCC High, DoD): We will begin rolling out mid-March 2025 and expect to complete by late April 2025.

[How this will affect your organization:]

When a user performs a keyword search in SharePoint Online, the service will now bring back matched results with content inside files that have user-defined permission labels.

Note that only files that are uploaded to SharePoint Online after this feature update is rolled out to your tenant will support this updated content search. These files are likely to show up in search results for the correct set of users as defined in the label for that file. Files with user-defined labels that already existed in SharePoint Online prior to the rollout of this feature update will not show up in search result until the labels are re-edited.

Similarly, new and edited files will show up in Purview eDiscovery searches for file content matches, and the label names for the files will display in Content Explorer. They are supported for your DLP policies.

[What you need to do to prepare:]

This rollout will happen automatically with no admin action required. You may want to notify your users about this change and update any relevant documentation as appropriate.
