Category:Microsoft Entra
Nummer:MC810910
Status:stayInformed
With the ever-increasing sophistication of cyber-attacks, the increasing use of cloud-based services, and the proliferation of mobile devices, it’s essential that organizations secure access for both human and non-human identities to all on-premises and cloud resources, while continuously working to improve their security posture.

We’re excited to share the Microsoft Entra feature release information for April – June 2024, along with second-quarter change announcements. This quarter’s updates include general availability releases for Entra ID and important change announcements on Azure AD Graph Retirement, enhancing the security of Apple devices in the enterprise with hardware-bound device identity, security updates to Entra ID affecting clients running old, unpatched builds of Windows, and many more.

Please refer to this link for a summary of the June 2024 product updates. We also communicate these updates via What’s New, email, and the release notes.

Note: The product update summary is organized by Microsoft Entra products, so you can quickly scan what’s relevant for your deployment.
An updated version of the July 2024 Scan Cab is available
Category:Windows
Nummer:MC810911
Status:preventOrFixIssue
IMPORTANT: This notice only affects environments where:
  • The Microsoft Scan Cab is used to check for update compliance.
  • The Scan Cab is used to manage updates for SQL Server 2019 on Windows.
  • The July 2024 Scan Cab was downloaded or deployed before 12:30 PM PT on July 11, 2024.

An updated version of the July 2024 Scan Cab file with information about Microsoft security updates was made available today, July 11, 2024. This new cabinet file has new information related to a recent security update released for SQL Server 2019 on Windows (KB5040948).

This new Scan Cab replaces the Scan Cab released on Patch Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

How this affects your organization:
If you use the Scan Cab to manage updates for servers running on SQL Server 2019 on Windows, you should download and deploy the new cabinet file published today, July 11, 2024. In addition to all information about Microsoft security updates released earlier this week, this most recent Scan Cab includes information for KB5040948.

If you deployed the Scan Cab published on Tuesday, July 9, instead of the most recent one, your environment will miss information for compliance with KB5040948.

No action is required on environments where Scan Cab is not employed. However, please note that there might be non-Microsoft applications which utilize Scan Cab. Review the documentation for any software and update deployment tools in your organization to understand if this is applicable in your environment.

What you need to do to prepare:
You can acquire the updated Scan Cab via the usual processes. For detailed guidance, see the Additional information section below.

Microsoft 365 admin center: User admin and License admin roles enabled to manage self-service license requests
Category:Microsoft 365 suite
Nummer:MC810926
Status:stayInformed

License admins and User admins will be able to manage license requests in the Microsoft 365 admin center. Currently, only Global admins can manage license requests. This change drives consistency with other Microsoft Entra portals in which these roles can assign licenses, such as the Microsoft Entra admin center, Intune admin center, and Azure Portal. Otherwise, no changes have been made to these roles’ permissions.

[When this will happen:]

General availability (Worldwide): Rollout for this change will start in mid-July 2024 and is expected to be complete by late July 2024.

[How this will affect your organization:]

Once available License admins and User admins will be able to manage license requests in the Microsoft 365 admin center.

[What you can do to prepare:]

License administrators and user administrators should familiarize themselves with the licensing process available at Manage self-service license requests in the Microsoft 365 admin center | Microsoft Learn

How to install WMIC Feature on Demand on Windows 11
Category:Windows
Nummer:MC811683
Status:stayInformed
If you need to continue using Windows Management Instrumentation Command line (WMIC), learn how to install it as a Feature on Demand (FoD). It’s a temporary solution while you migrate to PowerShell or a similar tool as WMIC undergoes deprecation. A new article shows you how to check if you have WMIC as a FoD and how you can install it if you don’t. Remember that later this year, WMIC FoD will be disabled by default on the next version of Windows 11 and Windows Server. Read more at How to install WMIC Feature on Demand on Windows 11

When will this happen:
  • WMIC has been available as a Feature on Demand (FoD) for Windows 11 since 2022.
  • It will be available but disabled by default on the next version of Windows 11 and Windows Server later this year.
  • WMIC feature will be ultimately removed in a future Windows release.

How this will affect your organization:
We recommend that you migrate from WMIC to PowerShell or other supported solutions. However, if you need it in the meantime, you can install it as a Feature on Demand (FoD).

What you need to do to prepare:
To install WMIC FoD, go to Windows Settings > System > Optional features > Installed features. If WMIC isn’t on the list of Installed features, do the following.
  1. At the top of the Optional features tab, locate Add an optional feature
  2. In that field, select View features. This will trigger a popup window.
  3. In the popup window to Add an optional feature, type “WMIC” into the search box.
  4. When WMIC appears in the results below, select it by checking the box next to it. Note: WMIC will not appear in the results if it’s already installed.
  5. Select Next to install WMIC feature in the same popup window.
